Nice Ploy — Repubs to Cut its Own House Budget

January 4, 2011

The fun never ends with these guys and gals. The House Republicans are shaving a small portion of the House of Representatives budget as an example to Democrats that they are fiscally responsible. That’s just bull. How about repealing the $2 trillion dollar Bush tax cut extension for the wealthy and make a real statement that has some weight to it PLUS actually make a dent in the deficit????? All smoke and mirrors. All contrary stuff indicative of collective narcissism: do as I say and not as I do.

House Republicans on Tuesday said they would reduce expenses of the House itself by $35.2 million to underscore their commitment to slashing government spending across the board.

Representative Greg Walden of Oregon, who has directed the transition for the new Republican majority, said that the reductions would be made in salaries and expenses to leadership offices, committees and individual lawmakers’ office budgets.

But even as the incoming speaker, John A. Boehner of Ohio, hailed the gesture, in dollar terms it amounted to only a small dent in the House budget — approximately 2.6 percent of the roughly $1.37 billion allocated for House operations in 2010.
